Today’s Scripture comes from Psalms 121, 123–125, and 128–130—David’s Songs of Ascent. Scholars believe these psalms were sung by pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for the annual feasts of Passover, Weeks, and Tabernacles. It reminded me of how we sing familiar Christmas hymns year after year—songs that center our hearts and mark the sacred rhythm of Advent in our lives.
These songs were expressions of the people’s longing to be holy, just as God is holy. Interestingly, I turned to these passages today after a busy season, feeling spiritually dry and tempted in my flesh. I began a fast three days ago and desire to continue it for a prolonged time—but there were ribs in the refrigerator calling my name!
To combat temptation, I opened my Bible and prayed:
“God, You are holy, and I want to be holy, because that is Your will. Help me, Father, to be holy as You are holy.”
After reading Psalm 121, I journaled about the prayer I had just prayed and wrote,
“I was encouraged—courage was instilled in me—when I read the final verse: ‘The Lord will keep you from all evil.’”
What a powerful and practical reminder: When we are in trouble, we should lift our eyes to the hills—from where our help comes from.
Then I read Psalm 123:3–4:
“Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.”
And I journaled:
“When we feel uneasy or overwhelmed, we should humbly lift our eyes to the One who can help.”
These chapters certainly met me where I was today.
Psalm 128 was an unexpected bonus. One of my greatest desires—and a key motivation that keeps me faithful during difficult seasons—is for my children to walk with the Lord. Verses 1 and 3 say:
“Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways! … Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.”
I’m committing to memorize this psalm and pray it regularly. I’m holding onto it as a promise to pray over my children and their children’s future walk with the Lord.
God’s Word was such an encouragement to me today. I hope your journey through Scripture is bringing you similar joy, peace, and help.
Takeaway: When you experience difficulties and temptation is real, lift your eyes to the Lord. He is your help and the source of courage to press on.
